The Battle of Talavera was fought between British and Spanish forces commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) and French forces under Marshal Victor and King Joseph Bonaparte. The two-day battle was extremely bloody, with over 13,000 casualties, but resulted in an Allied tactical victory.
This battle earned Wellesley his title as Viscount Wellington and demonstrated that British forces could defeat Napoleon's armies in open battle. It was a crucial moment in the Peninsular War that would eventually contribute to Napoleon's downfall.
